Interpreting

Definition of
Interpreting

Instant verbal expression in another
language of a spoken message.

For the sake of clarity, the term Interpreting
is preferred to 'interpretation', which has
wider applications.

Interpreter versus Translator

In common parlance interpreters and translators are often called,
simply, 'translators'. However, in the profession we make a
technical distinction: interpreters focus on the spoken word
while translators engage with the written word.

Modes of Interpreting

The most common modes of interpreting are:

Consecutive

Consecutive interpreting is performed sequentially. In practice,
the interpreter's voice alternates with that of the speaker.

Simultaneous

Simultaneous interpreting is performed via a microphone,
often from a booth, or whispered (no microphone).
The interpreter speaks in the other language at the same time
as the person who has the floor. In practice, the interpreter's
version trails a few seconds behind the original message.

Guidelines for Interpreters

In 2002 I wrote a compendium for interpreters entitled
Interpreting at F.W.C.C. Gatherings.
It was conceived for international Quaker conferences.
This 25-page booklet offers a series of practical guidelines
for interpreters, plenary speakers, and conference organizers.

The booklet is available from:
